A wonderful late 19th century long guard or ‘muff’ chain hand crafted in buttery 15ct yellow gold. The long fetter, sometimes referred to as ‘trombone’ links are interpreted with single round links and in total the chain measures a great, versatile length at 27.5”.
In the 19th century jewellery became more than just for appearance many items began to take o functional rolls. ‘Muffs’, which were pieces of fur design to keep ladies' hands warm and thus the ‘muff’ chain term was born. These would be worn around the neck so that women could wear their muffs with less hassle.
